When people think about composite lay-up, they usually picture material being placed onto the tool.
In reality, that’s only part of the job.
Before the next ply is even laid, the operator may have to collect material, identify the correct shape, check the fibre direction and confirm they’re working from the right stage of the laminate. On a complex part, those small interruptions happen again and again.
It’s rarely one big delay that slows production. It’s hundreds of small ones.
Taking preparation away from the tool
Composite kitting removes much of that preparation before the material reaches the lay-up bench.
Instead of working from full rolls of prepreg, the operator receives pre-cut plies prepared for a specific component or manufacturing stage. Depending on the customer’s requirements, the kit can be arranged in lay-up sequence and clearly identified, allowing the next ply to be picked up and placed without stopping to measure or cut material.
The flow becomes much simpler.
Rather than switching between cutting, checking drawings and laying material, the operator can stay focused on building the laminate.
It's not just about cutting material
People often assume kitting is simply cutting shapes in advance.
Good kitting goes further than that.
The way a kit is prepared should reflect how the component will actually be manufactured. Ply sequence, orientation and identification all matter because they reduce the time spent checking paperwork or searching for the next piece of material.
The aim isn’t to make the operator work faster.
It’s to remove unnecessary tasks that don’t add value at the tool.
Making better use of skilled operators
Experienced laminators bring value through their understanding of the material.
They know how prepreg behaves around complex geometry, how to avoid bridging and wrinkles, and how to achieve a consistent laminate.
Spending that time measuring standard ply shapes or searching for the next piece of material isn’t the best use of those skills.
By completing the cutting and preparation beforehand, manufacturers allow their lay-up teams to focus on the work that genuinely requires experience and judgement.
